Here Comes India, again!

Have been back from this "filthily annoying yet ridiculously incredible" country for almost 3 months, but I am just like many of the people who suffered from intensive nostalgia, this time it's India-wise. Randomly viewing FB and found an interesting note from Maria, so I have decided to posted it here. It's still unknown why people can be so annoyed in India yet they still love it, but it is sure that whoever survive in that country can easily survive in 90% of other countries, yay!!

Here comes the note:

When I came to India, I never thought I would:

1. Lose two debit cards in less than six months and have to make friends with Western Union
2. Realise that ‘What’s up?’ is one of the most nonsensical ways of greeting anyone ever
3. Develop an intense dislike for the word ‘random’
4. Not iron any of my clothes even once
5. Wee in the desert or in fact…
6. Go for a one or a two anywhere that didn’t classify as a ‘Western style’ toilet and definitely that didn’t involve toilet paper
7. Become even more addicted to tea than I was in England
8. Up my sugar intake per cup from 1.5 to 3.5 teaspoons (uh oh...)
9. Not learn to cook anything Indian (unless ginger tea counts)
10. Suffer for non-too-extensive but testing periods without running water, light, gas and a working fridge (luckily not all at once)
11. Only blow-dry and straighten my hair once in five months
12. Break my camera and be able to blame it on a camel
13. Have to melt buckets and risk mild electrocution just to heat water for a bath
14. Have to shower in the company of cockroaches (hardly 'Joe's Apartment')
15. Miss plastic bags so much (they are banned in Chandigarh) – the thrill I get when I see one now may cause problems when I get back home…
16. Actually feel happy when it starts to rain
17. Have to live in a house where things ‘go bump in the night’
18. Come to know a club with a cheesy name like ‘Score’ – makes for lots of one-liners (Are you going to score tonight etc…)
19. Be preached at to convert to Christianity by an Indian whilst traveling in a rickshaw (or indeed at all!)
20. Find out that it’s possible to have fantastic arguments with rickshaw drivers, even when they don’t speak English and my Hindi is pitiful – largely with the help of mime and dramatic tones of voice – and WIN
21. Live in a house that had a genuine cat burglar

But I’m so glad that I did:

1. Name and love a stray dog that now lives on our doorstep (I’d bring her home but Dad told me if I did he’d call me ‘Rabies Girl’)
2. Manage to have a full leg wax for only 120 rupees (less than two pounds!)
3. Find the best cakes and pancakes and tasty stuff in a café run by an Indian who studied European pastry-making methods in Australia and consequently…
4. Discover Nik’s ‘Special Power Breakfast’
5. Ride a camel
6. Start a personal project I’ve been wanting to do for a long time
7. Actually realize I could interact with and actually be loved by small children (small children were previously a phobia – I could often be heard saying, ‘I’d rather have a puppy any day’)
8. Meet more than one person who is similar to and understands me, regardless of age and the British/Indian difference
9. Realize that being British and especially having a British accent may not actually be that bad :D
10. Eat lots of chicken but also realize that vegetables can be quite tasty (and this from the girl who once said a meal could not be complete unless it contained meat!)
11. Manage (thanks Facebook!) to keep in regular enough contact with my best friend, who despite the distance, was still able to make me laugh and feel loved and comfort me on a bad day
12. Find out that I’m a lot tougher than I thought I was
13. Go to the cinema for about one twelfth of the price of the cinema in England
14. Finally throw my Converse away and get new ones! I think everyone I know in England will cheer if they’d seen the state they were in even before I left…
15. Realize what I want and what makes me happy
16. Have a dream and make it come true and…
17. Celebrate the New Year on a rooftop in Jodhpur realizing just this – that I was in my dream… and knowing now that maybe my other dreams are not as out of reach as I think…

Chandigarh Freeze

Tomorrow is the big day, since we are doing Chandigarh Freeze. What is Freeze? Check this out.

Happy Diwali

The streets are full of Diwali decoration, sweet shops loaded with dry nuts and colorful sweets, people are bustling on the road rushing to do their last shopping, yes, Diwali is coming!

Diwali (Festival of Light), also called Deepavali, is a really really important festival for Hindus, Jains and Sikhs, but it is celebrated nearly by everyone in India now. It's a day of lights and fire, to celebrate that human beings overcome the evils in their hearts.

Sindhi Sweet is packed with people and nuts (real nuts!), people are paying a lot for cookies, ladus, gulab jamuns, cashew nuts, rasins, happily and willingly. You can tell Diwali is different from all other holidays. Cops work harder, shops open later, people wear less(I hope, but fact is opposite) and the day become shorter. You don't see the effect of economic crisis here since people have been saving their bucks for a whole year for it. Everything just becomes more lively.

This is my first Diwali (how I wish I could be here for more Diwalis), but I am not going to be able to stay with my friends and enjoy the fireworks in Chandigarh. Tomorrow I am going on a 1 week trip in Rajasthan where it is SAID to have less celebration. Having worked for nearly a year without any long travel, I am so eager to make a trip like this, though it will be a trip all by myself.

I start to like my house again, with good friends, good drinks and good games. Pity we have only a couple weeks left. ok I am writing something completely random again. shit. Anyways, happy Diwali, people! I will def go to KFC with someone before leaving.

yes I am lazy now

Still a month to go and I am already feeling laziness has conquered some parts of my body and diminishing the desire to do a big travel. I was supposed to be in Amritsar taking photos of the Golden Temple, but ended up idled in Chandigarh walking a lot on Sunday and had a invisible hair cut. Feeling so strange having to accept the fact that I will be vanished from this city in which I have so many happiness, melancholy, good friends, and so much more. What more to offer is to be in such a different world compared to home. To whole year is just like a dream, and now the dreamer is afraid to wake himself up.

Idled as me, I still made up my mind to do a long trip during Diwali as my goodbye trip for India. I am going to celebrate Diwali in Rajasthan (namely Jodhpur, Udaipur and Pushkar) from next Saturday to next next Saturday. It would be great to see some really sharp contrast on colors, customs and environments (in the desert). I am used to travelling alone and quite enjoy the freedom it gives me.

The house is getting better and better, with more serious conversations and happy drinks at the chilly dry nights. Felt really good after sharing my experience and feeling with Noortje, it's like a heavily armed soldier can finally take off the armour and go home to have a nice sleep without being worried the somebody would come to hurt me at night. I am developing a really well-rounded seld-protection system in India, and I think as my departure approaches, I should abandon it now/.

"Dragon On Hot Roof",
1.China's Tibet Policy is also based on a myth, an imagined historicity that Tibet has been its part in the past...China has been guilty of imperial overreach against the dictates of geography. Beijing-Lhasa rail distance is 4064 km. Moscow is 4358 km from Delhi. Geographically and culturally, Tibet and China are poles apart.

NND

NND

I go to Chinese restaurant every week!! 赞!!CHOWMEIN就是炒面拉,还有诸如MANCHURIAN(杂菜丸子),SCHEZWAN(四川?)

You bitch!!

Chandigarh City Card

Actually this looks like I am promoting for Chandigarh Tourism, but the fact is I am.
This morning all the trainees went to Hotel MountView for a "breakfast" which is said to be celebrating the World Tourism Day. So there we were in the hotel, just so nice to be in a 5-star hotel and with all the decent looking people around. But the breakfast turned out that we have to be present at a press conference for the "Launch of City Card of Chandigarh", which to me is a good idea of marketing.

The City Card is a pass you can buy in any tourist spots at 100 rupees($2.5). With this card you can take any bus free of charge, go to Rock Garden and all the museums free of charge, and enjoy discounts in many restaurants and shops. Since Chandigarh is not the major tourism city in India, many tourist just come here for 1 day or simply come as the transition of the hill stations in Himalayas, the card can attract more tourists to spend money here and really travel around the city since the validity is for 3 days. It is a smart idea for me and I do believe this will help the tourism economy a lot.

Also on the conference we met the Governor of Punjab, a nice public speaker and wise person, as well the founder of Rock Garden, Nek Chand, whom we all thought has passed away (of course he is still kicking). Anyway, it's just a half day update and this afternoon we will be having a picnic in Leisure Valley with 100 kids from a slum and it would definitely be nice and meaningful.

Indian police use old guns of different types. Even security guards have guns of their own.

Driving in Chandigarh is like a breeze.
You are paying a little to get yourself killed here in India. Better not take any cars when you have heart-attack.

I don't know why Indian people have such nice teeth, because they drink lots of milk and eat dairy products?

A week in India (Dec 23, 2008)

Hey guys, as I always said, if you can survive in Guangzhou, you can survive in any part of the world. I have been surviving in Guangzhou for 23 years, so I am alive and well in India.
Hve been here for a week and found myself getting used to the setting here. Found out that actually prices here are same as Guangzhou so I am not living a rich guy here. Hve been working for a week, and got to know much about Indian thinking, Indian culture so I feel life pretty fruitful here.
Right now I am designing the questionnare for the young people project abd I need the advice from you.
What methods do you think we can adopt to change their attitude towards hardworking?
I am feeling tired, but will update more in a few days time.
Wish all you guys Merry Christmas

My first day (Dec 18, 2007)

Today is the first day to work in DIR. I went directly to Janta Colony, which is a slum for poor people near the city of Chandigarh. DIR has been working in this area for 2 years and made certain contributions especially to small kids and pregnant women. To change the poor situation of a area it is better to teach people how to find a solution than giving them solutions. So we trainees are mainly responsible for changing the people's attittude. Tough job it is, all the team is confident because we believe that if we dont do anything the situation can be worse. So I decided to do sth with young men here who have been very lazy and not willing to work.

Tomorrow I am going to work with Lieke, a Dutch girl who had been here for 3 months on this project.

Things are new here yet similar as in China, I think I can do my best as a Chinese here.
God, everyday is new to me, how can I have enough time talking with all of you? Wish I had 3 heads and 6 arms.

In Incredible India-2 (Dec 16, 2007)

Today I visited a few famous places around Chandigarh like Rock Garden which is made of junks and waste but is so innovotive. Chilled out in a cafe in Punjab University and had tea and coffee for just 12 Rupees(2 RMB) in total. Weather is lovely with a good sunshine and breeze but still feeling cold. Dare not eat so much since I will be stuffed with vegetables here and my tooth ached a bit.

The most brilliant part turned out to be the General Body Meeting (GBM) of AIESEC Chandigarh that I was introduced to the crew as the newest trainee in town. AIESEC members in Chandigarh are so passionate and well organized, meanwhile, they are proactive and care much about the development about the LC like fix asset or how to raise fund for the coming National Congress of India. I was amazed to find that compared to Chinese AIESECers, Indian AIESECers are more smart in work and party.

Much to be shared but I am too tired now so please wait for my next travelogue:)

In Incredible India-1 (Dec 15th, 2007)

Have so much to share with you, the first day in India was like I have never left China since except for languages and the skin complexion, we people seem to be the same.
\
Delhi is old and foggy, cold in the dim light with a bustling of cars on the narrow streets. I mistook it as some medium size towns in central China at first sight, nothing too vivid. Then I saw the people, the crowd awaiting outside the airport(which is pretty old), the drivers who wave heads when they wanted to confirm their idea, the huge Devanagari ads outside a small stores, I realized I am, finally, here in India.
The first night is quite peaceful, little bit tired (2 and a half hours later then China) after 6 hours and a half on the plane so I took a quick shower and went to bed. My watch points at 2:04 am (4:34 am BJ Time).
Next day, Ankur's mum knocked at my door at 8 sharp, serving me with hot tea and biscuit, felt so warm. Finished it quickly (I really did some preparation before coming to India so I know some rituals and the fact that tea is a daily need here) I took a walk with Ankur's dad in the small playground near the mansion. Delhi again welcomed me with thick fog and dry weather, but the cold air completely woke me up. My first Indian breakfast was bread, orange juice, onion salad with cooked tomato thick sauce, started to feel a little ache on my teeth. Anur's family was so kind that they even provided me the food on my way to Chandigarh. Suffered from a stomache, I only MISSY some fruits. Again, everyone drank tea when the bus stopped over at a resort for toilet.
Reached Chandigarh at 5:15pm local time and met with Tusharp, so nice to have an AIESECer recieved you because you can easly find a topic to chat. But we chatted too excitedly that he nearly crashed the car into another. His house is one of the typical dettached mansions in this City of Beautiful, 2 floors with a courtyard in a tranquil community named MANI MAJARA. At 9 pm I had another homemade India vegi dinner.
Toothache woke me up this morning and gave me the chance to write down my story in India, haha. Hope our Chinese medicine can cure Indian toothache. I feel too much heat in my body!!! You guys know what I mean lar!
Take care of yourself my dear friends.
